CRJ-900 flight crew reported starting takeoff roll from LUAW clearance with crossing traffic on the runway resulting in a rejected takeoff.
First leg; first day of Captain IOE. Departing ZZZ to ZZZ1. Completed before takeoff check to the line; as we rolled towards the hold short line for XXR at ZZZ we were cleared onto the runway. I thought that it was a cleared for takeoff clearance. We entered the runway did a before takeoff check below the line and the check airman had to prompt me to make the callouts to 'confirm the runway' and how to use tiller to align with runway. We line up and exchange controls do the rest of required callouts and as pilot flying he adds thrust for takeoff. We begin the roll; all is uneventful until he says 'traffic abort' I look up see traffic and abort the takeoff. During the abort Tower calls us and tells us to abort; we reply we already are. There was traffic crossing XXR at I believe [Taxiway] 1 coming from a landing on XX. We exit the runway at 2; report to Maintenance and they instruct us to return to gate for inspection. We complied. We aborted at approximately 95 kts. Reflecting back I think we were actually just cleared to line up and wait. Tower gave us a phone number and said possible pilot deviation.New Captain behind the airplane causing check airman to do First Officer (FO) role; training role; and Captain role. I think because instruction was required as we entered the runway and I didn't confirm with him the clearance received we just treated it as we were cleared to takeoff without other thought. I felt behind for a number of reasons such as - it's been over 2 months since I've flown. - and over 5 weeks since I've been in the sim - literal first day in the airplane since I'm a transition upgrade. Each of those I feel contributed to the event occurring but in the end we just acted out of habit not thoughtful decisions.Suggestions: Standardize a way to have a physical indicator if cleared for takeoff or line up and wait. Maybe a specific light that isn't turned on until takeoff clearance is received etc. More than one sim of differences training or a shorter gap between training and IOE I think either would have helped increase my bandwidth and perhaps helped prevent the occurrence.
Being the first Day of IOE with a new Captain I was working with my student to maneuver on the Ramp using proper use of the tiller and thrust during taxi; We received our clearance to taxi to XXR via [Taxiway] 3; By the time we had taxied onto 3 taxiway things had slowed down and while taxing to Runway XXR we completed checklists and held short of the runway and waited for instructions from tower. We were given a clearance to line up and wait. We proceeded on the runway and in position; I was busy helping my student properly line up on centerline using the tiller and getting the proper sight picture of centerline; while verify the area clear of traffic. We exchanged controls to the right side. 'I was flying in the right seat' I received the controls; completed the heading check call and then proceeded with the takeoff roll; I thought I had heard a Clarence for takeoff. Just passing 80 kts I saw an aircraft crossing down the runway which I believe was at 1 intersection; and realized that we did not receive a clearance to takeoff. I called for the Abort and we executed the rejected takeoff procedure at approximately 95 kts. Just after we started the abort procedure we received a call from Tower telling us to abort the takeoff and we replied we were already in the process. We exited the Runway at 2 intersection; Tower sent us to Ground and we taxied 4; 5 taxiway to hold short of 6. At this point we; talked with the Flight attendants and the passengers and explained what had happened; We then entered the rejected takeoff in flight view maintenance. While stationary ATC asked that I called them; which I did. We then called Maintenance and returned to the gate. I then proceed to notify the company though the appropriate channels. Maintenance inspected the aircraft; we coordinated with the Dispatch and then completed the flight to ZZZ1.I feel that I was task saturated at the gate and as we taxied across the ramp; I was working with a new student and this was their first time in the left seat at the controls during taxi. This was no different then before with other students; We were given clearance to line up on XXR and again I feel I was task saturated making sure the turns and power was applied correctly as well as scanning for traffic and I had the preconceived idea of us taking off and was think about what was going to happen and my procedures. As the controls were transferred I processed in my mind that we were cleared for takeoff as I generally do not transfer controls to my First Officer (FO) until the clearance to takeoff. All this lead to us beginning our takeoff roll without clearance.Suggestions: Try to complete Checklist as soon as possible to hear ATC clearance better. I could have a more in depth discussion with my Upgrade students on taxi techniques and methods prior to taxi for the first time to allow less of a diversion. Put in place a way to mark on my notes when takeoff clearance has been received.
