Synopsis
CRJ-900 pilot reported the left wheel brake locked up during taxi causing the tire to skid and incur damage.
Narrative
I was approaching taxiway 1 southbound on 2; so I started breaking to make the turn onto 1. The turn felt rough and rumbly. Once I straightened out the aircraft on 1 it took an unusual amount of power to continue moving. Initially I thought something was wrong with the nose tire/gear. Tried moving the tiller which moved freely. Came to a stop and requested ground to send operations out to have a look for us. Operations said nose gear looks fine; no fluids leaking. However ops person saw skid mark from left main gear on taxiway 1.BTMS indicators showed 6 / 2 / 2 / 2I called Maintenance and they advised that aircraft would need to be deplaned on taxi way 1 so they could take a look at it there.Shut both engines down and advised ground; Operations; passengers and dispatch. Upon going out and inspecting I saw the skid mark as well and the rubber on LH outboard tire was damaged.Maintenance confirmed that the LH brake had locked up.Passengers were transported back to terminal on busses and we operated the flight on a new tail.
