Synopsis
Air carrier Captain reported auto brake system grabbing after arming during taxi. Flight was towed back to the gate.
Narrative
We were taxiing to Runway XXL for departure to ZZZ1. After turning onto taxiway 1 from taxiway 2; final items of the before takeoff checklist were completed (including arming the auto brakes to MAX). The brakes then grabbed" momentarily; followed by a single ECAM chime and the "BRAKES AUTO BRK FAULT" ECAM displayed. We stopped the A/C (aircraft) and consulted the FM (Flight Manual). Ground asked if we could move as to not block departing traffic. As the A\C's normal braking appeared to work; we complied with ground's request. Once repositioned; we consulted with MX (Maintenance). MX directed us to reset the system by cycling the A/SKID & NW STRG (Nose Wheel Steering) switch. The ECAM cleared. We proceeded to taxi and reset the auto brakes to MAX. Again the brakes "grabbed" momentarily and the "BRAKES AUTO BRK FAULT" ECAM displayed on the upper ECAM. The brakes now felt quite degraded as I brought the A/C to a stop. Out of an abundance of caution I elected that the safest course of action was to have us towed back to a gate. We coordinated with operations and ATC to be towed back to a gate. ZZZ ground then provided priority handling. The fire chief and ZZZ Airport Operations staff met the A/C on taxiway 1. Sometime later a tug arrived and towed us back to gate XX."
