Aborted takeoff just prior to V1 (approximately 138 knots) due to severe compressor stall on right engine. No prior indications were detected on instruments.

Flight attendants later reported observing flames coming from front of engine and loud bangs. The abort was initiated when noticing right engine pressure ratio gauge surging.

Except for overheating the brakes, the abort was uneventful. Mechanics later verified extensive damage to right engine.
