Took runway for departure. Number 2 engine did not come up normally. Exited runway and cycled throttle to determine responsiveness. Determined okay. Took runway and ran power up to 70 percent N1 with brakes on. Okay; so we took off.
At 3000 feet AGL, got fire indication; pulled throttle back per standard operating procedure and indication went out. Returned to BZN at reduced power setting. Declared an emergency due to urgency of situation. Landed without further incident. Problem determined to be a bleed leak between engine and starter.
Supplemental information from ACN 257992: Cockpit resource management really helps in these busy situations. We made sure to fly first and do everything else second.
