The oldest jets still flying in 2026
What a year of live ADS-B tracking says about the age of the planes overhead
Over the last 12 months FlightFinder's ADS-B network observed 7,699 aircraft flying for 36 airlines with well-documented fleets. Cross-reference each tail number against the FAA registry and public aircraft databases and you can put a build year on most of them — including 1,211 aircraft built more than 25 years ago and still in revenue service. The oldest airliner we saw in a major U.S. passenger fleet is a Delta Boeing 757 built in 1986. It turns 40 this year, and it is not retired — we watched it fly.

The genuinely old metal mostly flies freight. The oldest average fleet on our board belongs to Cargojet at 32.2 years; UPS's median aircraft is 27 years old, and FedEx still operates a Boeing 767 built in 1983. The pattern is structural: freighters fly fewer pressurization cycles per day than short-haul passenger jets, so the airframe fatigue clock runs slower, and cargo carriers monetize aircraft that passenger airlines have already depreciated away. The Boeing 757 is the clearest case — production ended in 2004, so every one of the 302 we observed is at least two decades old, averaging 30.2 years. Nobody builds a replacement in its exact class, so they keep flying.

At the other end, Porter Airlines averages just 2.6 years — a fleet younger than most phones' support windows. Startups and ultra-low-cost carriers dominate the young end for a simple reason: they were founded recently and bought new.
One reading to resist: fleet age is not a safety ranking. An aircraft's age says little by itself — maintenance discipline, inspection cycles and flight-hour profiles matter far more, which is why regulators track airworthiness directives rather than birthdays. A 30-year-old freighter on a rigorous check schedule is not a headline; it is the system working as designed. The full per-airline breakdown, including age distributions and per-type detail, lives in our fleet age tracker.

Methodology
Source: FlightFinder's continuously observed fleet — distinct airframes seen via ADS-B over the last 12 months, attributed to the operator that flew them most. Build years come from the FAA aircraft registry (authoritative for U.S. registrations) and OpenSky/ADS-B Exchange metadata for the rest, accepted only when the metadata's aircraft type matches the type we observed — registration numbers get reused across airframes, and an unvalidated lookup will happily date a 787 to 2001. Airlines are published only when we observed at least 20 aircraft with a known build year for at least 70% of them; averages are of observed aircraft, not the carrier's full fleet. Fleet age is not a safety indicator. Numbers refresh quarterly with the underlying dataset (2026).
