What happened
On February 17, 2026, a private flight involving a Jabiru J430 aircraft departed Johan Pienaar Airport (FAKU) in the Northern Cape. The pilot intended to land at Rhenosterfontein Farm Airstrip in the North West Province, a location situated approximately 75 nautical miles from the departure point. Weather conditions were reported as visual meteorological conditions with good visibility and light winds.
The aircraft, carrying 80 litres of Avgas 100LL, climbed to 5,500 feet for the cruise portion of the journey. Upon approaching the destination airstrip, which features a 1,305-meter gravel runway at an elevation of 4,003 feet, the pilot initiated the landing sequence. According to the pilot's account, he performed a pre-flight inspection that revealed no anomalies prior to departure.
During the final approach, the pilot reduced speed to approximately 65 knots and extended the flaps to 30 degrees in accordance with the aircraft’s Pilot’s Operating Handbook. However, the aircraft touched down with significant force. The impact caused the left main landing gear to collapse immediately upon contact. As the aircraft continued its roll, it veered sharply to the left off the runway surface. This deviation led to the failure of the nose gear, causing the nose section to pitch downward and the propeller to strike the ground. Despite the substantial damage to the airframe, no injuries were reported among the pilot or any persons on the ground.
The investigation
SACAA AIID conducted a limited occurrence investigation into the serious incident. Investigators reviewed the pilot’s statement, the aircraft’s maintenance records, and meteorological data from nearby Sishen Airport. The pilot held a valid Private Pilot Licence and Class 2 medical certificate. The aircraft was airworthy, with its last annual inspection completed in June 2025 at 996.2 hours.
The investigation focused on the sequence of events leading to the structural failure. Meteorological reports indicated that weather played no role in the occurrence. The primary focus shifted to the pilot's handling of the aircraft during the critical phase of landing. The lack of a go-around attempt and the manner in which the aircraft was managed on final approach were identified as central elements of the inquiry.
