What happened
Garuda Indonesian Airways Flight 150 was operating a scheduled domestic passenger route connecting Kemayoran Airport in Jakarta to Sultan Mahmud Badaruddin II Airport in Palembang. On September 24, 1975, the aircraft encountered severe weather conditions while attempting to land at its destination. The flight crashed during the final approach phase, striking terrain just 2.5 miles from the town of Palembang due to poor visibility caused by fog and adverse weather.
Investigation
The accident investigation determined that the primary cause was the crew's inability to maintain visual reference with the runway environment due to the dense fog and poor weather conditions during the approach. The aircraft failed to clear obstacles on the final descent path.
Findings
The crash resulted in significant loss of life. 25 individuals aboard the aircraft perished, along with one person on the ground. A total of 61 passengers and crew were on board at the time of the incident.
