After an earlier engine surge and oil leak, a pilot landed with a failed left main gear following a power loss due to oil escaping from a misaligned oil filter seal.

Initial Engine Surge and Return to Airport

During flight, the engine surged and propeller speed increased to 3000 RPM. The pilot retarded the propeller control, maintaining 2400 RPM, and proceeded to Gastonia Airport, where he landed without further incident. A ground run-up was conducted, and all instruments and controls were checked and found normal. The pilot did not shut down the engine or exit the aircraft.

Witness Observation and Subsequent Takeoff

A witness observed oil on the aircraft, but before reaching the plane, the pilot took off. The witness also saw oil on the ramp where the aircraft had stopped.

Second Engine Failure and Forced Landing

Later, at 1600 feet MSL, the engine again surged to 3000 RPM, and the pilot noted a drop in oil pressure. Immediately afterward, the engine began to knock and lose power. During a landing in a small pasture, the left main landing gear failed.

Investigation Findings

Investigation revealed that oil had escaped from the base of the oil filter, where the oil seal was out of its groove. A 100-hour inspection had been performed on the previous day.

Probable cause

Oil escaped from the base of the oil filter due to the oil seal being out of its groove.
