Circumstances of the Flight
The pilot stated that the flight was undertaken for the purpose of meeting with realtors concerning a parcel of land. While circling the land at an altitude between 500 and 700 feet above ground level, the engine experienced a complete loss of power. The pilot initiated a forced landing in the same field that was being circled.
According to the pilot, it became apparent that the aircraft would strike trees during the rollout if the landing were continued. In response, the pilot attempted to fly over the trees and land on a road beyond them.
Witness and Passenger Observations
A ground witness observed the aircraft circling, then suddenly losing altitude. The witness stated that the aircraft came within a few feet of the ground when a loud surge of power was heard. The aircraft then flew through a row of trees.
A passenger reported hearing the engine sputter. The passenger said they tried to land on a road but could not stop in time to avoid trees, so they took off again.
Examination Findings
The aircraft came to rest inverted on a road approximately one-quarter mile from the trees. An examination of the aircraft revealed no preimpact malfunction. The propeller blades exhibited extensive cordwise scratches.
