Incident
A pilot reported that while flying, he reduced engine power below cruise to survey one of his business locations. Afterward, he advanced the throttle to climb but could not obtain full power. He noted a gradual loss of power and airspeed, ultimately becoming unable to maneuver due to low airspeed and proximity to the ground. The aircraft subsequently struck trees and crashed in a wooded, mountainous area at an elevation of approximately 6000 feet above mean sea level. The ambient temperature was about 55 degrees Fahrenheit.
Pilot's Account
The pilot stated he had extensive experience flying in mountainous terrain and indicated he would have recognized carburetor icing if encountered. He also reported that he had the carburetor heat engaged while maneuvering for the emergency landing.
Engine Examination
After a few damaged parts were replaced, an operational check of the engine revealed it ran normally.
Probable Cause
Not determined from available information.
