Accident Overview
During the takeoff roll, the pilot reduced engine power and initiated a crosswind turn. At that point, the engine abruptly quit. The pilot subsequently performed a landing in a soft, terraced pasture. During the landing roll, the nose gear collapsed rearward, causing the aircraft to flip to an inverted position.
Post-Accident Examination
Upon examination, two ounces of water were found in the fuel tank that had been used for takeoff. Notably, fuel continued to drain from that tank even 24 hours before the wings were removed for detailed inspection. The aircraft had reportedly been parked outdoors during a period of heavy rainfall in the week prior to the accident.
Witness Statement
A mechanic who witnessed the departure stated that the pilot did not conduct an engine run-up before takeoff.
