Incident Overview
An instructor pilot departed Ormond Beach Airport despite having been directed by the operator to remain on the ground until weather conditions improved. The pilot subsequently contacted Daytona Beach Approach Control, requesting a Special VFR clearance and vectors to Daytona Beach Airport.
Weather Conditions
Instrument flight rules (IFR) conditions prevailed at both Ormond Beach and Daytona Beach at the time of the incident. Visibility was restricted to between 1 and 2 miles in fog, with overcast ceilings reported at 300 to 400 feet.
Wreckage Location
The wreckage of the aircraft was discovered approximately half a mile east of Ormond Beach Airport.
