Incident Overview
A single-engine aircraft experienced a fuel exhaustion event during an IFR flight, resulting in a forced landing on an interstate highway. The pilot had not refueled after a previous flight of about one hour. Before departure, he visually checked the fuel and estimated 41 gallons remaining, believing he had about 5.2 hours of fuel.
Flight and Fuel Mismanagement
During the flight, the pilot diverted for an en route fuel stop, thinking he had more than sufficient fuel. However, after approximately 4.3 hours of flight time, the engine stopped operating about 4.5 miles from the destination airport. The pilot then executed a forced landing on an interstate highway.
Forced Landing
During the landing roll, the wings struck metal reflectors at the end of a bridge. The aircraft sustained damage from the impact. The pilot reported having considerable time in the Piper PA-28 but more limited time in the Warrior model. An investigation revealed both fuel tanks were empty.
Investigation Findings
Examination of the aircraft confirmed that both fuel tanks contained no fuel. The pilot's fuel estimation was inaccurate, leading to the exhaustion of fuel before reaching the intended diversion airport. The forced landing on the highway resulted in contact with bridge reflectors during the landing roll.
