Incident Overview
Following a 1.8-hour flight, the fixed base operator (FBO) serviced the aircraft with 15 gallons of fuel. The pilot reported draining the sumps as part of the preflight inspection. Pretakeoff checks and the takeoff roll were normal.
Loss of Engine Power
At an altitude of approximately 75 to 100 feet above ground level (AGL), the engine lost power. The pilot elected to land on a road rather than on snow-covered terrain.
Landing and Impact
To align the aircraft with the road, the pilot executed a sharp right bank, then leveled the wings before touchdown. The aircraft bounced hard on landing. During the second touchdown, it struck a road sign and came to rest on the side of the road.
Fuel Contamination
After the incident, six gallons of water were found in the aircraft's fuel tanks. Additionally, approximately 150 gallons of water were pumped from the FBO's fuel storage tank.
