During a simulated engine failure on downwind, a pilot moved the fuel selector to the intended left tank but the selector plate had rotated, leading to an off position. No engine response during go-around resulted in a forced landing into a fence.

Event Sequence

While on the downwind leg, the pilot moved the fuel selector to what he believed was the left tank position. He also set the throttle to idle to simulate an engine failure. The pilot extended the pattern to allow another pilot to back-taxi down the runway to the run-up area. Subsequently, the pilot elected to perform a go-around; however, when the throttle was advanced, there was no engine response.

Forced Landing

During the ensuing forced landing, the aircraft struck a fence situated on level, snow-covered terrain. The impact occurred at touchdown approximately 30 yards before the approach end of the runway.

Post-Accident Observations

After the accident, the pilot noted that the fuel selector position plate was loose and had rotated 180 degrees. The intended left tank position was aligned with the "OFF" detent.
