Incident Overview
A flight operation involving two aircraft, a T-34 and a Cessna 150, occurred at an airport with Runway 32R. The T-34 pilot initiated a downwind leg following the Cessna. When the T-34 reached a point abeam the approach end of Runway 32R, air traffic control cleared the T-34 for a touch-and-go landing. At that moment, the Cessna 150 was already positioned on the runway.
Sequence of Events
The pilot of the Cessna 150 requested permission to execute a 180-degree turn on the runway in order to taxi back to the taxiway. The tower granted this request. Subsequently, the controller informed the T-34 pilot to anticipate a go-around maneuver. The T-34 pilot responded by asking the tower to repeat the instruction ("say again"). In response, the tower cleared the T-34 pilot to continue the approach. The pilot acknowledged with "Roger, that." Immediately thereafter, while the T-34 was transitioning from base leg to final approach, the aircraft was observed to enter a spin. The spin led to a crash.
Investigation Findings
A post-crash examination of the T-34 wreckage was conducted. The inspection found no indications of any malfunction or failure that occurred before the crash.
