Incident Overview
The pilot was conducting a flight to maintain proficiency. He had not flown the specific make and model of aircraft within the previous 90 days, though he had flown another tailwheel-equipped aircraft on December 4, 1981.
Landing Sequence
While landing, the pilot touched down while correcting for a crosswind. He later believed that he may have been experiencing a left quartering tailwind. During the landing roll, two wind gusts were encountered that raised the left wing. Subsequently, the aircraft veered to the left, and the right wing struck the runway surface.
Outcome
The aircraft continued off the left side of the runway. As a result of the excursion, a gear bolt failed, and the propeller made contact with the ground. The wind conditions at the time were gusting up to approximately 14 knots.
