Loss of directional control during landing due to crosswind gusts (N68655)

What happened

Prior to initiating the landing phase, the pilot observed a wind sock indicating winds from 270 degrees. Attempts to obtain updated wind information via UNICOM were unsuccessful as no response was received. Upon touchdown on Runway 17, the aircraft encountered a strong gust of wind that resulted in a loss of directional control. The aircraft subsequently departed the paved surface and entered sandy terrain. During this excursion, the nose gear collapsed upon impact with the ground. The pilot later reported that the onboard wind gauge recorded a gust speed of 30 knots at the moment of landing.

Findings

The investigation determined that the crosswind component exceeded the aircraft's certified capability at the time of the event. The failure to maintain directional control was directly linked to these meteorological conditions exceeding the operational limits of the airframe.
