Incident Overview
A student pilot and instructor were conducting a training flight. The student completed a touch-and-go landing and was climbing out when the instructor took control. The instructor stated he intended to demonstrate the procedure for an engine failure shortly after takeoff.
Maneuver Description
At an altitude of 150 to 180 feet above the runway and near the upwind numbers, the instructor reduced power to idle. He initiated a right turn to offset from the runway, then began a slipping left turn back toward the runway in an attempt to land downwind. The aircraft developed a high sink rate as it approached a position perpendicular to the runway.
Engine Response and Impact
The instructor added full power to arrest the descent, but the pilot reported that the engine felt like it loaded up and did not develop power immediately as the throttle was advanced. The aircraft struck the runway in a wings-level attitude.
Post-Accident Examination
Examination of the fuel injection servo revealed evidence of internal leakage. However, the unit operated normally when tested on a bench. The manufacturer noted that internal leakage could cause hesitation or loading up under certain conditions.
