Incident Summary
On the day of the incident, a pilot received a weather briefing during which icing conditions were mentioned on three separate occasions. While en route at 14,000 feet, the pilot was informed of a pilot report (PIREP) indicating light to moderate icing between 14,000 and 22,000 feet. The pilot responded that this was consistent with what he had been experiencing. Between 1548 and 1559, multiple pilots and air traffic control discussed inflight icing conditions in the area.
Flight and Wreckage
At 1611, the pilot requested a climb. Three minutes later, at 1614, he reported being unable to maintain altitude. The wreckage was located the following day at the 9,300-foot level of a 9,600-foot peak in the San Mateo Mountains.
