Accident Sequence
Approximately eight minutes after takeoff, the aircraft was observed by witnesses at a very low altitude. It then entered a right turn that gradually steepened until the wings were nearly vertical. After completing almost two turns, the wings leveled for a brief instant. Following that, the right wing and nose dropped, and the aircraft dove into trees.
Pilot Medical History
The pilot's medical records showed a history of coronary artery disease, beginning with a coronary collapse in 1962. He was hospitalized in 1971, and the last electrocardiogram taken before discharge revealed an unequivocal acute high lateral infarction. The pilot was advised of the risks and danger to his life if he were to fly again.
During flight physicals conducted in 1977, 1979, and 1981, the pilot marked "No" to a question about previous heart troubles. There was no evidence that the pilot had stopped flying for any extended period during the past 20 years.
