Incident Overview
A pilot conducting a local flight elected to land at Big Lake Airport. Before landing, he observed weather moving in from the northwest. The wind sock was limp but indicated a landing to the west, which he performed. After landing and before taking off again, the pilot noted the wind sock had not moved.
Sequence of Events
During the takeoff roll, the pilot encountered a wing drop and a veer to the right. He corrected the situation and continued. He reportedly lifted off at about 60 mph and lowered the nose to accelerate, at which point the right wing dropped abruptly and the plane veered sharply to the right. The pilot stated he had extreme difficulty correcting but finally brought the aircraft straight. However, the airspeed remained at about 60 knots, and the plane would not climb out of ground effect. He aborted the takeoff, and the plane continued off the end of the runway, crossed a road, and hit a ditch.
Pilot Statement
The pilot stated that the wind had shifted to a quartering tailwind. The passenger, a small child, was secured on the pilot's lap with the same belt.
