Accident Details
The aircraft operated normally during taxi, run-up, takeoff, and climb to 3,500 feet mean sea level (MSL). Approximately 17 miles from the departure airport, the engine stopped running. The pilot executed a forced landing in a dirt field. During the landing, one of the main landing gear failed. The propeller separated, and the wings and fuselage sustained damage.
Post-Accident Examination
An examination of the engine revealed no preimpact defects. However, a quantity of sawdust-type material was found in the auxiliary fuel line. The material was sufficient to induce fuel blockage. The origin of the substance could not be determined.
Context
The pilot reported that the fuel selector had been positioned to the auxiliary fuel tank from takeoff until the engine stoppage. Additionally, the aircraft had not been flown in a 12-month period prior to being sold to the current owner/operator.
