Accident Narrative
A test flight ended in a crash shortly after takeoff. A witness observed the aircraft in a steep angle of climb. As the pilot initiated a left turn, the nose pitched downward, and the aircraft subsequently crashed. The witness noted that the pilot had been adjusting the magnetos prior to the flight.
Investigation Findings
Post-crash examination of the engine and airframe revealed no preimpact failures. Both magnetos were examined and bench tested. Each magneto was driven clockwise on the engine, and both produced a strong spark when tested. However, internal settings were inconsistent.
Magneto Examination
The right magneto's distributor gear and breaker were configured for counterclockwise rotation. The left magneto's distributor gear was set for clockwise rotation, but its breaker cam was adjusted for counterclockwise rotation. Due to damage from the crash, the magneto-to-engine timing could not be verified. Additionally, both magnetos had been installed at the extreme limits of their adjustable mounting slots on the engine.
