Event Summary
Two rated pilots, who had just purchased the aircraft, were ferrying it from New York State to California. According to the pilot, during takeoff he lifted off near the mid-point of the runway and held a flat attitude to gain airspeed. He felt there was not enough climb developing to clear trees and turned left 15 degrees. After the turn, the aircraft mushed into steadily rising terrain.
Witness Reports
Witnesses stated that the aircraft took off at a relatively slow speed and never appeared to accelerate.
Post-Accident Inspection
An inspection of the engine controls revealed that the fuel primer was in an unlocked position. Investigators noted that this could have resulted in a rich mixture, leading to a loss of power.
