Accident Overview
On May 22, 1982, at approximately 1200 Eastern Daylight Time, an aircraft departed Lapeer, Michigan, destined for Frankfort, Kentucky. The pilot, who was not instrument rated, had requested an IFR weather briefing from a flight service station the previous day at 1701 EDT on May 21, 1982. No flight plan was filed for the departure.
Sequence of Events
The aircraft eventually crashed in a wooded area near Northville, Michigan. Prior to the crash, the aircraft struck a treetop and then a powerline before impacting the ground. Several witnesses reported hearing and/or seeing the aircraft flying at low altitude before the accident.
