What happened
The pilot reported that he encountered a downdraft while the aircraft was in the initial climb phase. This sudden loss of lift caused the plane to stall and subsequently hit the ground. Upon recovery, the aircraft came to rest with substantial damage visible. The nose gear was broken, the propeller was bent, the engine mount was fractured, and a strobe light was also damaged.
The investigation
An investigation into the incident revealed that the wind was from the northwest at about 10 knots. Investigators noted that the terrain around the airport was flat with no hills or rising terrain, ruling out topographical interference as a factor in the downdraft's formation or severity.
Findings
The primary issue identified was the loss of airspeed below the critical stall speed due to the atmospheric disturbance. The structural failures were consistent with a high-energy impact following the stall. No mechanical pre-impact failures were indicated by the damage pattern.
