Incident Overview
A pilot experienced difficulty extending the landing gear during approach. The normal gear extension system failed to operate. The pilot cycled the gear handle four or five times and checked the circuit breakers. Attempts to extend the gear using the hand pump were unsuccessful as the pump was jammed. Abrupt maneuvers were also tried but did not result in gear extension. The aircraft performed a wheels-up landing.
Damage and Findings
The wheels-up landing caused damage to the propeller tips, belly skin, and nose gear doors. After the landing, metal filings and shavings were discovered in the telescoping part of the emergency gear handle. The pilot and two other persons had extended the handle with some difficulty before the investigator arrived.
Investigator's Observations
The investigator examined the normal and emergency gear systems and found no discrepancies. The two main tires were being held in the wheel well by the tires resting on the ground. Perpendicular scuff marks were noted on the tires. The investigator tried to force the shavings into the emergency gear handle but was unable to do so.
