Overview
A pilot landing on Runway 26 at a private airport experienced a loss of control during the final approach after the aircraft encountered a gust of wind. The aircraft rolled to the right, struck the ground with its right wing, and nosed over. The pilot reported no mechanical issues.
Sequence of Events
The pilot entered the traffic pattern to land on Runway 26 at a private airfield. The airport had no UNICOM frequency and no usable windsock. On final approach, according to the pilot, the aircraft was hit by a gust of wind, causing it to roll to the right. The pilot stated that he was unable to recover from the roll. The right wing subsequently hit the ground, and the aircraft nosed over.
Environmental Conditions
The airport elevation was 3,470 feet. No VASI (Visual Approach Slope Indicator) lights were installed on Runway 26. Approximately 30 miles to the south, at Goodland, Kansas, the reported wind was from 150 degrees at 15 knots, and the temperature was 76 degrees Fahrenheit. Although this data is from a different location, it provides indication of the general wind conditions in the area.
Witness Accounts
Witnesses observed the aircraft on final approach. They reported that when the aircraft was about 50 to 100 feet above ground level, it rolled to the right. The descent continued until the aircraft contacted the ground.
Pilot Statement
The pilot stated that there was no mechanical failure or malfunction prior to or during the event. He attributed the loss of control to the sudden gust of wind encountered on final approach.
