Sequence of Events
The pilot step taxied the float plane to the northern end of Neil Lake in preparation for a southward takeoff. As the aircraft approached the north shore, the pilot initiated a left step turn to position the aircraft toward the south for takeoff. During the turn, while the aircraft was still on a northerly heading, it lifted off the water.
Accident Details
In an attempt to continue the takeoff following the uncommanded lift-off, the right float struck the tops of two trees. Subsequently, the aircraft crashed and began burning.

According to the investigation, the aircraft was estimated to be approximately 300 pounds over the maximum gross weight limit at the time of the accident.
