Accident Description
During the short final approach to Runway 8, the aircraft collided with a four-foot-high irrigation ditch located 50 feet from the approach end of the runway. The impact occurred as the aircraft was preparing to land, with the ditch positioned close to the runway threshold.
Pilot Statement
The pilot stated that he had planned to touch down near the beginning of the runway to maximize the available landing distance, as the runway was only 3,800 feet long. This decision was made to ensure sufficient runway length for the landing roll.
Documentation Findings
Investigation revealed that the irrigation ditch was not mentioned in several standard sources of airport information. It was absent from the FAA Airport/Facility Directory, which provides detailed descriptions of airports and obstacles. The ditch also did not appear in the Flight Service Station NOTAM system, which disseminates hazard notices. Additionally, it was not listed in the Colorado Airport Directory or the 1982 AOPA Airport Directory, both commonly used references for pilots.
