Narrative
Following a cross-country flight, the aircraft arrived at a 1900-foot landing strip. The pilot performed a fly-over to inspect the landing area before initiating the first approach. That approach was aborted with a go-around.
Second Approach
On the second approach, the aircraft was high and fast. The pilot slipped the aircraft to lose altitude and extended full flaps. Despite these actions, the aircraft was still maintaining about 80 miles per hour at the runway threshold.
Landing and Overrun
In the almost calm air, the aircraft floated for several hundred feet down the runway. The pilot was prepared to abort the landing when the wheels touched down. He applied the brakes but could not stop the aircraft before it departed the departure end of the runway. Subsequently, the aircraft collided with a fence and trees.
Probable Cause
