Accident Details
A pilot was conducting agricultural dispensing operations with a helicopter. Before takeoff, the pilot noted that the fuel quantity gauges indicated sufficient fuel to complete one additional load and still have an adequate reserve.
After dispensing the load, while returning to the nurse truck at approximately 100 feet above ground level (AGL), the engine lost power. The helicopter was about to cross a power line, so the pilot turned to avoid the obstacle and leveled the aircraft. However, the helicopter landed hard.
Damage and Injuries
The helicopter sustained substantial damage. The pilot received a compression fracture of a vertebra.
Post-Accident Examination
An examination of the helicopter revealed that both fuel tanks were empty. No evidence of a fuel leak was found.
