Accident Overview
A single-engine aircraft was destroyed when it was forced to land after takeoff due to insufficient climb performance. The pilot had calculated the aircraft's weight to be 90 pounds below the maximum gross weight. The density altitude at the airport was approximately 5,000 feet.
Pilot Account
According to the pilot, after takeoff, the aircraft achieved an altitude of only 50 to 100 feet above ground level (AGL) at best. The surrounding terrain exceeded the climb rate of the aircraft, necessitating a forced landing.
Accident Sequence
The forced landing was executed in an area of small trees and scrub growth. During the ground slide, the aircraft nosed over. A post-crash fire ensued, destroying the aircraft and approximately one acre of trees.
Post-Crash Fire
The fire consumed both the aircraft and the surrounding vegetation. The aircraft was completely destroyed by the flames.
