What happened
The aircraft experienced a critical failure during the initial phase of flight, resulting in a loss of directional control. During the takeoff roll, the airplane dragged its wingtip along the pavement surface. As the situation deteriorated, the aircraft swerved off the runway and came to rest outside the paved area.
The pilot reported that he was unable to maintain a positive rate of climb after liftoff. In an attempt to abort the takeoff, the pilot lowered the landing gear. This action coincided with the loss of control of the aircraft.
The investigation
Examination of the circumstances revealed that the density altitude at the time of the accident was 8,200 feet. This high density altitude significantly reduces engine performance and lift generation capabilities. The weather conditions were visual meteorological conditions (VMC). No flight plan had been filed for this operation.
Findings
The primary factors contributing to the accident were the high density altitude and the pilot's decision to continue the takeoff despite insufficient climb performance. The inability to maintain climb led to the abort maneuver, which resulted in the loss of control and runway excursion.
