During takeoff, a pilot attempted to cross under a power line but struck a fence post, then hit a house roof and a tree before crashing in a backyard. Investigation revealed inadequate runway length for obstacle clearance.

Accident Sequence

During takeoff, the pilot elected to cross under a power line near the end of the runway after realizing he could not fly over it. As the airplane crossed under the power line, the right main landing gear struck a steel perimeter fence post. Across the street from the power line and perimeter fence was a house. The pilot then pulled the airplane up, but the left wing struck the roof of the house and the right wing hit a tree. The airplane subsequently impacted in the backyard and hit a fence before coming to rest.

Environmental Conditions

The reported winds in the area were 180 degrees at 4 knots at Will Rogers World Airport and 190 degrees at 10 knots at Wiley Post Airport. The density altitude was about 2,500 feet.

Aircraft Configuration

The owner's handbook recommended that 25 degrees of flaps (2nd notch) be used for short field takeoffs. However, the flaps were found in the first notch.

Performance Data

An investigation of the aircraft performance data revealed that the runway length was not adequate for the airplane to clear a 50-foot obstacle under the existing conditions.
