What happened
The pilot was conducting a landing operation onto a 1800-foot grass runway oriented toward the southeast. Environmental conditions included a crosswind component from the northeast with speeds ranging between 10 and 15 knots. During the final approach phase, the aircraft was configured with full flaps deployed to manage descent rate and airspeed.
At a critical point during the landing sequence, the pilot's attention was diverted by four individuals operating model aircraft in close proximity to the runway environment. This distraction compromised situational awareness and control inputs. Consequently, the aircraft descended rapidly, described as mushing or dropping into the ground. The resulting impact force caused the right main gear to collapse upon touchdown.
The investigation
Post-acc examination confirmed that the primary mechanical failure was the structural collapse of the right main landing gear assembly. This damage was directly attributed to the excessive vertical load experienced during the hard landing event. No other significant mechanical anomalies were reported prior to the impact.

The sequence of events indicates that pilot distraction by non-aviation personnel and equipment near the active runway was a primary factor in the accident. The failure to maintain proper flight path control due to this diversion resulted in an uncontrolled descent and subsequent hard landing.
