Accident Summary
A pilot reported that after a normal approach, the aircraft touched down at approximately 90 mph on the first quarter to one-third of the runway. The pilot raised the flaps and applied brakes but found insufficient braking action on the wet runway. By the time the pilot recognized the inadequate stopping performance, there was not enough runway remaining to execute a go-around. The aircraft continued off the end of the runway, crossed an adjacent road, and collided with an embankment. The impact sheared off the nose gear.
Pilot Report
The pilot stated that the approach was normal, but the touchdown speed was about 90 mph. The normal approach speed for this aircraft is 64 mph. The runway was wet, and despite applying brakes, the aircraft did not stop in the available distance. The pilot noted that insufficient braking action was evident, but the decision to abort the landing came too late.
Aircraft Examination
An inspection of the aircraft's braking system revealed that the brakes functioned properly. There was a slight fluid leak at the head of the left brake cylinder. The density altitude at the time of the accident was approximately 7,100 feet.
