Accident Details
The pilot attempted to start the aircraft but could not do so with the mixture set in the normal (rich) position. The mixture was then adjusted to lean, and the engine started successfully. This flight was the first since the aircraft had undergone an annual inspection.
During the takeoff roll, the engine lost power. The pilot subsequently landed the aircraft off the end of the runway.
Post-Accident Inspection Findings
A post-accident inspection of the aircraft revealed several anomalies. The fuel pump adjustment screw had to be adjusted by three turns to bring the fuel pressure down to within normal limits. Additionally, when the mixture was leaned at a 1000 RPM setting, there was a 100 RPM rise. The spark plugs were found to be fouled with carbon deposits.
No other issues were reported from the inspection. The aircraft did not sustain any further damage beyond the off-runway landing.
