What happened
The aircraft experienced an unexpected loss of engine power at an altitude of approximately 750 feet during the initial climb phase following a takeoff from the water. Due to the limited expanse of the lake, there was no adequate area available for a safe emergency landing. Consequently, the pilot was unable to maintain control or clear obstacles and collided with a dike located near the shoreline.
The investigation
A post-acc examination of the aircraft revealed significant contamination within the fuel system. Investigators discovered approximately two cups of water present in the carburetor, fuel lines, the gas sediment bowl, and the fuel tanks. This finding indicated that water had entered the fuel supply chain, disrupting combustion.
Findings
The pilot reported refueling the aircraft using portable five-gallon cans because aviation fuel was not available at Fire Lake. The presence of water in the fuel system suggests improper handling or storage during this process. The combination of engine failure and the lack of suitable landing terrain on the lake directly led to the collision.
