Incident Overview
The pilot was conducting a cross-country flight and planned a refueling stop at Goodland, Kansas. During arrival, the pilot elected to land on Runway 05. There was no evidence that the pilot established radio contact with Goodland Flight Service, which is located on the airport, to obtain an airport advisory.
Runway Configuration
Runway 05 intersects with a concrete runway (12/30) at about midfield. The surface of Runway 12/30 was higher at the intersection, creating a bump for aircraft using Runway 05.
Witness Observations
Ground witnesses reported that the aircraft landed with a high ground speed. After passing the intersection, the aircraft bounced into the air. According to witnesses, the aircraft then bounced on the nose gear three times before the nose gear collapsed.
Environmental Conditions
The density altitude at the time was approximately 5400 feet.
