Accident Details
A small island situated in the center of a lake was the site of an accident during an aircraft takeoff. The lake was approximately 4,000 feet in length, oriented from southeast to northwest. The aircraft departed from the southeast end of the lake.
Pilot Report
The pilot stated that after lift-off, the aircraft attained climb speed but was unable to climb beyond an altitude of 20 to 30 feet above the water. Severe turbulence was encountered during the takeoff, causing the aircraft to drift and subsequently collide with trees on the island.
The pilot indicated that a takeoff path to the east of the island would have been more advantageous. However, a boat was located between the island and the eastern shore of the lake, preventing that departure route. The aircraft was approximately 20 pounds below its maximum gross weight at the time of the incident.
