Takeoff Attempt
A pilot began a takeoff from an unimproved strip with two passengers on board. The winds were from the northeast at 20 knots, gusting to 35 knots. The pilot reported that after rolling about 300 feet, the airspeed indicator showed over 40 knots. The pilot took off after rolling approximately 380 feet.
Flight Path
The aircraft flew momentarily, then dropped suddenly and bounced off the end of the strip. It climbed slowly into rising terrain, clipping the top of brush. About 500 feet beyond the strip, the pilot realized the aircraft would not clear larger trees, so he lowered the nose and flew into the small trees.
Environmental Conditions
The takeoff area was reportedly subject to downdrafts when the wind was from the east. The elevation of the strip was about 1,800 feet.
