On September 5, 1982, a Cessna 207A (registration N76078) operated by Bethel Ventures, inc. was involved in an aviation accident near Near Kipnuk, AK. Investigators recorded the probable cause as: The complete loss of engine power due to oil exhaustion caused by a crack in the engine crankcase. This summary draws on records from the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) historical archive.
An aircraft experienced complete engine failure during approach after losing oil pressure, leading to a forced landing where the plane nosed over on soft ground.
What happened
The pilot reported that the aircraft lost oil pressure while flying in normal cruise conditions. Shortly after this initial indication, the engine began running roughly. The engine failed completely while the pilot was on approach for a forced landing. Shortly after touching down on uneven, soft, wet tundra, the aircraft nosed over.
The investigation
An investigation revealed there was a crack in the engine crankcase, PN 633412, where oil had leaked out. A teardown of the engine revealed evidence of oil exhaustion. The pilot reported that there was ample oil when he checked it prior to takeoff.
Probable cause
The complete loss of engine power due to oil exhaustion caused by a crack in the engine crankcase.
