Incident
Shortly after takeoff, the pilot reported that the radio master circuit breaker tripped. After repositioning the switch, the breaker tripped again. While returning to the airport, the landing gear and flap trim failed to respond. The pilot confirmed a complete loss of electrical power and, with smoke and fumes present in the cockpit, elected to land with the landing gear retracted.
Investigation
Examination of the aircraft's electrical system revealed a short circuit between the alternator filter assembly. An internal wire was found to be contacting the case of the assembly, causing the short.
Probable Cause
The investigation determined that the electrical failure was caused by a short between the alternator filter assembly, specifically an internal wire shorting to the case.
