What happened
The pilot was operating an aircraft on a flight home from a hunting trip near Nome. During the approach or transit phase, the weather conditions were deteriorating, characterized by a low ceiling and marginal visibility within certain valleys. At approximately 1300 BDT, the aircraft struck a rocky slope that had a 30-degree incline at an elevation of 1300 feet. Upon impact, the aircraft bounced backward four feet before coming to rest. The collision resulted in a fire that engulfed the aircraft.
The investigation
Investigation data included weather observations recorded at Nome at 1357 BDT. The report indicated a scattered cloud layer at 500 feet and an overcast layer at 1200 feet. Visibility was reported as six miles with light drizzle present in the area.
