A pilot landing at Shook Mountain Resort Airport encountered a fence across the runway due to a discrepancy between reported and actual runway length. The runway's closed portion had been converted to other uses.

Event Details

A pilot flying to Shook Mountain Resort Airport called the facility beforehand to obtain information about the airport, which was new to him. The person who answered reported that it was a nice day and that the windsock had blown down. During arrival, the pilot approached from the northeast. Before landing, he assessed the runway to be a beautiful 4,000 ft plus strip. However, during the landing roll, he noticed a fence across what he thought was near the middle of the runway. By that time, there was insufficient room to stop or go around without hitting the fence.

Discrepancies in Published Data

The pilot noted that the sectional chart showed the runway length as 2,500 ft, but his flight guide indicated it was 3,150 ft long. An investigation revealed that years earlier, the runway had been nearly 4,000 ft long. The last portion of the runway had been on a farmer's land and had been converted to other purposes. That closed portion was marked with X's and piles of shrubs were placed on it. The open portion of the runway was 2,550 ft long.

Pilot Actions

The pilot did not circle or enter a normal traffic pattern before landing.
