Incident Details
A pilot attempted to depart from a 1200-foot alfalfa field while carrying a load of seed. The aircraft failed to attain flying speed during the takeoff roll. Upon realizing that insufficient distance remained to abort the takeoff and stop, the pilot released back pressure on the controls until nearing the end of the field.
Sequence of Events
Approaching the field boundary, the pilot pulled back on the stick, hoping to lift the aircraft over a fence and settle into the adjacent field. However, the aircraft struck the fence. The left wing impacted a corner post, causing the airplane to swing sideways. The landing gear collapsed during the impact. The aircraft then continued through a second fence before coming to rest.
Mechanical Condition
No mechanical failure or malfunction was reported in connection with the accident.
