Incident Summary
During the takeoff roll, the right side of the canopy detached from the aircraft as it climbed through approximately 150 to 200 feet above ground level. The pilot immediately notified the tower and received clearance to land on any runway.
Pilot Actions
According to the pilot, he turned crosswind too soon and initiated a downwind leg that was too close-in while avoiding glider operations. Subsequently, he began a tight 180-degree turn from a low downwind position to final approach. During the turn, the pilot reported that the aircraft "began to fall out of the sky." He applied full power and managed to regain partial control over a taxiway. He then decided to reduce power and land. The aircraft touched down hard in a three-point attitude and sustained damage.
Pilot Observations
The pilot believed that the front canopy pin was engaged before takeoff, as it was visually checked. However, he noted that the rear pin was located outside of its proper position. He had recently installed a new weather seal at the rear hatch.
Recommendations
The pilot recommended a more thorough check of the canopy attachment, including both front and rear pins, to ensure proper engagement prior to flight.
